Your Questions Answered!

Hello everyone! We hope you all had a wonderful Halloween and stopped by to listen to our Halloween special featuring the owners of  Virtual Girl Productions and Running Lady Studios. We discussed machinima which is the use of real-time 3D computer graphics to create a cinematic production in a virtual platform. So basically we talked about film making in Second Life. We interviewed AvaJean  Westland of Virtual Girl Productions and Suzy Yue and Gnu Aeon from Running Lady Studios and it was so much fun! If you have not heard the interview don't fret click the link below to hear the fabulous interview:
Wilder's Spooktacular Halloween Special

Machinima is quite interesting in Second Life and seeing their short film "The Twilight Sim: It's a Bloomin' Halloween," really made us want to interview the talented individuals behind the concept. If you have not checked out the short film be sure to click its title above and watch on Youtube.

Our radio show "The Wilder Side of Business" is only thirty minutes long, therefore we were only able to ask a few questions to the talented trio and it appears that some of you listeners had questions as well. We sent your questions to the three individuals and we now have their answers to the questions below:

Listener #1's Question:
Are the people who participate in your films paid actors or volunteers with a love for   machinima?

AvaJean’s Answer:
It depends on the project. For projects where we are dealing with either an SL company or an RL company, Suzy has worked very hard to make sure we all get fairly compensated for our time and work. Since our current projects are being made to create our brand and brand awareness for our new ventures, we try to give a stipend to our actors to show our gratitude, but most of them volunteer and do it out of friendship and to help us create our vision.

Suzy and Gnu answer:
Ditto what AJ says.  Actors in both RL and SL work for free too often.  Suzy's Super Cast & Crew was created, in part, to help create a culture of paying SL based actors.  Though a lot of that type of work from RL based companies has slowed down, we try to pay what we can to our actors and we always give a "bonus" at Christmas time, for making themselves available throughout the year.  It's not as much as we'd like to give them, but it does let them know how much we appreciate them.

Listener #2's Question:
How can our listeners who are interested be a part of your films? Are there open auditions to the sl public?

AvaJean’s reply:
We don't tend to have open calls for voice work unless it calls for a very specific voice. We are definitely open to meeting people who are interested and passionate about performing. What we look for in SL are people who are very adept at skills necessary for machinima: driving/moving your avatar; extensive wardrobe including skins, shapes, hair and clothes; variety of animations, AO's and emoter HUDs. For people with less experience, we've brought them on board as background actors (extras) so that they can acclimate and learn on the set. They should contact Suzy Yue to audition for Suzy's Super Cast & Crew.

Suzy and Gnu’s reply:
Ditto what AJ said with regards to SL actors.  We also look for patience and a sense of humor, both necessary for what can turn out to be very long shoot days.  As for voice actors, this projects featured voice actors in who are outside of the SL scene. But a number of the actors we work with regularly in world have begun to explore voice acting in RL as well. Olaf Barbosa (Doug Jacques in RL) for instance, has been featured in a number of Running Lady Studios and Virtual Girl Productions films.  He has fantastic voice and had begun to develop it further by spending the  last year with a vocal coach in RL.  He's now been featured in a number of SL and RL based films and commercials.

Listener #3's Question:
Did any of you do anything special for Halloween?

AvaJean answered:
I am currently in Arkansas in rehearsals for a play that opens Friday, "Checks & Balances". So I was in rehearsal this evening. Nothing special for Halloween except to spread the word about "The Twilight Sim" during the day! I got lucky and missed Storm Sandy back in NYC!

Suzy and Gnu answered:
We were on a plane  for most of the day.  Having spent the last three months in California doing a play and a two week pit-stop in New Mexico to see family, we finally made our way to our temporary home in Oklahoma (we are relocating to New York in the  spring).  So no Halloween for us this year, but it was a treat being on your show!
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We at Wilder PR would like to say it was a treat for us as well to have them all on the show as guests. We will watch for their upcoming projects and keep our audience posted. We are sure the upcoming year will hold something huge for these individuals. Their hard work and dedication definitely shows in each of their productions and we wish them nothing but the very best in their already bright futures!

Wilder PR has moved to the beautiful OGlam sim. I want to give a special shoutout to Vixie Rayna, Matteo Bettencourt, and Linda Reddevil for allowing us to move to their wonderful sim. We are very happy to announce our new location and want to invite everyone down to visit the new office.

Ansleigh really put a lot of work into making our office look absolutely fabulous. Everyone who visits compliments her on a job well done and I too am very impressed with her decorating and design skills. No matter how long I work with Ansleigh she never ceases to amaze me with what she is capable of and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again she is a true blessing for Wilder PR.

The new location is amongst some of SL’s best clothing designers at the OGlam mall. THE WILDER SIDE OF BUSINESS APPLE MAY DESIGNS FOLLOW UP

Last week on The Wilder Side of Business talk radio show we had the amazing Apple May as our guest. As many of you know Apple May is the owner and creator of the fabulous Apple May Designs, one of SL’s most well known clothing stores since 2007. Time did not permit for us to get to all the questions asked from our listeners and Apple agreed to answer your remaining questions so we could post them for you all to see. Thank you so much for your time and being a guest Apple May,  it was truly a pleasure!

Ericka asked: Do you solely make your living from your work in SL or do you also work in real life?
Apple’s reply: Second life has become such a big part of my life that yes it is my personal sole source of income.

Redflare asked: What type of changes in SL clothing have you noticed during your time as a  designer?
Apple’s answer: Mainly the quality! What was once considered high quality is yesterday's news and every designer is striving for more realism in their designs. For me, I've focused more on the realism of lighting & bending which plays a big part to how realistic the clothes look. Of course, styles have changed as well just in real life. I feel that in Second Life we push the boundaries a bit more while looking for our own unique 'style stamp'.

Trishelle asked: Does the realism of mesh inspire you to be even more creative and push the limits of your own creativity?
Apple’s response: Absolutely! I feel that unless I push myself then I can't grow. As I said during the interview, mesh has really released the chains on the creativity and restraint of sculpties. Now I feel I can conquer designs that I once shied away from. Pacing myself is now the hard part. I can't even count the amount of designs that I have started but yet to finish just because I had to get the basic design out of my head.

Emiliana asked: When you started making clothing in SL, did you dream this big or is the reality of what you’ve created larger than what you hoped for?
Apple’s reply: The store has turned out more than I ever thought it would be and I sincerely have the customers to thank for that. Each purchase is something I'm grateful for and I'm absolutely delighted that others can enjoy my passion and visions for fashion. Every design is based off of what created AMD... the need for something unique that embodied quality textures and at a price just about everyone can afford.

Phaylen Fairchild Answers Your Questions from The Wilder Side of Business

(Image property of Phaylen Fairchild)

This week on The Wilder Side of Business talk radioshow we had Phaylen Fairchild as our guest. Time did not permit for us to get to all the questions asked from our listeners and the wonderful Phaylen agreed to answer your remaining three questions so we could post them for you all to see. Thank you so much for your time and being a guest Phaylen, it was our pleasure!

Diego asked: What is the most rewarding thing about creating movies in a virtual environment?

Phaylen's reply to Diego: The most rewarding thing is most certainly the satisfaction one gets after completing a project. I'm sure this is the case in any field; for writers it's that satisfaction when finishing a book. For someone who likes to knit, it's that moment you complete that final stitch and spread it out to take it all in. From the moment you take that first shot, everything you do afterward is in pursuit of the completion. It's amazing to watch something come together, and that feeling you get in the afterglow is quite addictive!

Whimsey asked: Granny panties or thongs? (lol that one cracked me up)

Phaylen's answer to Whimsey: I'm all about forging my own path instead of following ones already made. In an effort to restore long lost trends, I'm all about the Care Bear Under-Roos.

Evangeline asked: What are the titles of the movies you worked on besides Divas?
Phaylen's response to Evangeline: I created and produced the Second Life Reality Series "I Wanna Be A Celebrity"
I created the official Burning Life 2008 promotional teaser for Linden Lab
I was the voice of the main character in Toxic Menges film "Little Red Riding Hood" which was a reimaging of the classic tale.
I was the voice of Mistress X in the sci-fi Machinima series "the Hunter"
I did the now rather archaic film "Welcome to Your Second Life"
I did the Old Spice Spoof "I'm on a Yak" commercial
I created the Moxie Polano featurette of the Woman in The Water
The film trailer for the online game Angels & Demons
I'm working on a short film called The End Of The World based on my short story.

Walk Walk Fashion Baby

Poptart Lilliehook, CEO Modavia Fashion Marketing, Photo provided by Poptart

The Wilder Side of Business was honored to have Poptart Lilliehook, CEO of Modavia, as our amazing guest on this weeks broadcast (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/wilderprinc/2010/09/26/ep-4-walk-walk-fashion-baby-the-wilder-team-sits-d). She discussed everything from Modavia Fashion Marketing and what it takes to be part of the team to the highly successful Modavia Fashion Week 2010 which all fashionistas are still talking about long after the event is over. There were some wonderful questions sent in but 45 minutes went by so quickly that we were not able to get the questions asked live on air. Once again we appreciate all of our listeners and we apologize for time not permitting the questions live on air.

Poptart agreed to answer the questions and allow us to post them here on our blog for all of you eager listeners. We understand how busy she is and definitely thank her for her time!

Question/Answer Segment:

Jilly: I know alot of us lately have been saving our Lindens did the sluggish SL economy affect Fashion Week in anyway? Or do you feel the economy affects Modavia and projects you are currently involved in?

Poptart: Well yes and no. I think designers are being more careful with their marketing spend at the moment. But it seems large industry events like Modavia Fashion Week are still being prioritised. I believe the opportunity to showcase the best of SL couture design to the grid (and beyond..) is seen as a worthwhile investment by most designers. But you are right ... sales of high end couture have been hit by the current economic climate with some talented smaller designers being forced to re-evaluate their strategy or face closure. This is one of the reasons that Modavia makes an effort to support and to help to promote emerging designers through these kinds of events and subsidized advertising in the Modavia Fashion Directory. We will also be awarding rent free stores on MODAVIA II to selected designers in a new initiative which will be unveiled soon.

Monica: SL and RL aren't so far removed as they once were. Do you see Modavia working with RL designers in the future and if yes what capacity? Would you bring them into SL?

Poptart: Well the most obvious difference between the two worlds is that a totally different economic model is in place in the industry. In real life couture costs an arm and a leg... consumers buy carefully and place a much higher value on their purchases. In SL fashion is very affordable for almost everyone and this makes it disposable and leads to an insatiable appetite for the latest novelty. I feel rather sorry for designers here really – they put so much work into their creations and they’re “old” very quickly. Not true of all of course – there are those classic pieces that people will wear forever... those must have staples that we all have in our wardrobes.
The other main difference is of course the seasons... in RL fashion is always 6 months ahead to cater for the lead time that buyers require to get the right season’s clothing into the stores at the right time. But here we work on a different calendar.... So when we run our Fall Fashion Week in SL.. in reality the RL events are all showing Spring/Summer 2011. I think if I asked SL designers to design 6 months ahead they would not be too enthused..
Having said that, we already have several RL fashion designers in SL - a good example is Nyla Cheeky of House of Nyla - she releases her RL and SL collections together. Another example is Exclusiva (formerly VictoriaV). So RL/SL crossover does happen and I do expect to see more of it. Modavia has been approached by RL designers from time to time to guide their entry strategy into SL but nothing has, as yet, progressed beyond an exploratory stage.

Edwin: Modavia seems to focus alot on women will there ever be an all male event?

Poptart: Uh you are perfectly correct. I wish you weren't but you are. We are very focussed on female fashion and one of our priorities now is to grow the coverage of men's design more. It's harder work attracting the designers who cater for men it seems and we haven't quite cracked it yet. Fair comment.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
So many fans of Modavia both new and old want to keep up with everything Modavia is doing. We asked Poptart to provide us with links that will keep all of you fashion lovers up to date on all things Modavia. Be sure to check them out!
